Fearless Gardening News

posted Nov 23, 2011, 10:52 AM by PTA Administrator   [ updated Oct 15, 2012, 7:33 PM ]

The day we have all been waiting for…. Fearless Gardening Blog Launch!!
Thank you to Sharon Beesly for making this dream a reality!

The Saturday Bulb Planting Party on Nov 5th was a great success!  Thank you to all who joined us, we also had quite a bit of tree damage from the storm to clean up.  Thank you Nancy Eder for the bulb presentation, another 200 tulips and daffodils were planted in the Recycle garden, (guess which color?)

Bulb Planting Curriculum-  With thanks to our grantor Grow NYC,  all first grade classes planted bulbs on Nov 7th, and all second grade classes planted on Nov 14th.  Each child planted 1-2 bulbs of crocuses, daffodils, scilla, snowdrops, or anemone in the Interactive Classroom Garden.  Each class also planted a mystery bulb. Go on a hunt with your child this March to find where they planted their bulbs.

ER roof cleanup on Nov 10th- Success.  Thank you Paul, Paul, Megan and Christy (and Piper and Nicolas!)  All the composting equipment was cleaned and organized and ready to proceed.  The Rooftop was organized for fall and winter planting of garlic and kale, we are moving forward with Urban Roots.

Composting Initiative-  hosted by the second graders, Ms Columba’s class is leading the charge.  They are collecting compostable items in the cafeteria, weighing, and will begin “mixing” for the composting grant.  Leaves and sticks collected from the Workparty on Nov 5th will be used.  So far so good!  Please ask your second graders what they are learning.

Urban Roots-
We have finalized negotiations for teacher training and curriculum mapping that will happen this fall.  If anyone has some time to help research grow lights, magnifying glasses, or irrigation systems: that would be most helpful.  Thank you to Citizens Committee Grant for making this a reality!

Bulb Fundraiser-
Dear Friends and Families-
Know anyone that plants bulbs?  Garden or terrace or just need fabulous holiday gifts?  Please see this link!  http://www.bloominbucks.com/
Brent and Becky’s Bulbs will write a donation to PS84 in the amount of 25% of your purchase when you choose to support “PS84 PTA” while shopping with them.
Please forward to Family and Friends, they ship directly to the purchaser!  How easy!  This is a triple-whammy:  ask your friends and family to: 1. support PS84, 2. support a small family business(with great customer service), and 3. receive terrific bulbs for their garden or gift.

organization to support:  PS84PTA.

Notes from all over- I am looking for a good source for children’s sized gloves, know any?
I am looking for a carpenter who can lower a shelf in the greenhouse, anyone?
I am looking for some Kindergarten parents that want to do an art project in the garden this spring, think about it.
I am looking for a free cubic yard of mulch for the week of December 5th, anyone have a truck?
I am looking for a quiet leaf blower, recommendations? Donations?
I have a vision for an Earth Day Concert & neighborhood event from some of our musical parents in the garden on April 21st…… If you like this idea, spread the word!

Read Gary Rubinstein's blog posts on TeachforUs.org. These articles describe in detail the flaws with the city's calculations that impact many schools, including P.S. 84.
